?I?m trying to think of something yummy for me to take you to?? said my friend Sue when she picked me up at the airport in Portland. I had just landed there a half hour earlier just in time for lunch. I shrugged and told her that it didn?t need to be yummy. I was traveling up to Oregon for Feast Portland and for the next three days I was going to be gorging myself on food that went beyond yummy. The first event, the epic annual Sandwich Invitational, did not disappoint. This year I was HIGHLY selective about which sandwiches I sampled, knowing that even with my immense appetite I couldn?t taste everything. But I definitely tried. From smoked lamb belly from Restaurant Beck to Peking Quail from St. Jack to Olympic Provision?s Grinder sandwich I was stretched thin, trying to figure out which one to sample. In the end, I pretty much went for it all. Levant?s lamb gyro was tantalizing, Destination?s Chinese BBQ on a crepe was everything it promised to be and of course Franklin?s BBQ was totally worth the wait in line. Little T Bakery was serving up the most delightful sfogliatelle pita with Greek style yogurt cream and fruits of the forest and Eggslut?s egg dip sandwich had me whipping out my phone so I could take a photo and text it to my partner AJ who would have LOVED it. Even though I tried to hold back, clearly I did a terrible job with self-control. I walked back to my hotel filled to the brim from day 1 of Feast Portland. Two more days left of Feast for me and already I?m full. It?s a tough life.
