  • 1 pound of spaghetti
  • 1 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of dried basil
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 4 cups of vegetable or chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Freshly grated parmesan cheese, for serving


  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and cook for an additional 2 minutes. (Time: 7 minutes)
  2. Add the can of crushed tomatoes, dried basil, and 4 cups of broth to the pot. Bring to a simmer. (Time: 5 minutes)
  3. Break the spaghetti in half and add it to the pot. Use a spoon to push the spaghetti down so it is completely submerged in the broth. Cover the pot and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the spaghetti is cooked to your liking. This should take about 10-12 minutes. (Time: 12 minutes)
